Sports Connect - Edition 6

Published Mon 31 Aug 2020

WELCOME

Welcome to this edition of Sports Connect, a publication aimed at keeping you informed and up to date on industry events and highlights.

Highlights this month include our two industry events with SA Chief Public Health Officer, Professor Nicola Spurrier. I want to take this opportunity to thank Professor Spurrier for giving so willingly of her time to address the sports industry. It is critical that we maintain our vigilance and compliance and Professor Spurrier will speak directly as to why this is so important for our industry and the community more broadly. Members will also have the opportunity to pose specific questions to Professor Spurrier and a panel of experts.

Our training offerings continue and we encourage you to contact Warwick Povey, our Membership and Training Manager at membership@sportsa.org.au to discuss tailored training options for your club or sport.

A huge thank you to our members who have recently renewed their membership for 2020-21. We could not continue to do what we do without your valuable support and endorsement of us as your peak industry body.

Our State Sports Dispute Centre has been very busy in the last few months, which is a timely reminder to all of our members that the service is available to support you once internal dispute resolution mechanisms have been exhausted.

We wish you all the very best as we head to the late stages of winter season and planning for summer season. As always, don’t hesitate to contact us with any concerns or questions you may have.

Play well.

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SPORT HALL OF FAME

In a year that has seen many changes, so too have our Hall of Fame and Board of Governors Committees.

This year we are thrilled to welcome current SA Sport Hall of Famers Anna Meares OAM and Michelle den Dekker OAM, along with sports columnist Ben Hook to the Hall of Fame Selection Committee.  Anna, Michelle and Ben share an abundance of sporting knowledge to accompany the ongoing members of our legendary Hall of Fame Selection Committee including David Prince OAM (Chair), Bruce McAvaney OAM, Pat Mickan, Wes Battams and Roger Wills.

We send our thanks to retiring Committee Members, Sandy Pisani OAM and Jenny Williams, for their valuable contribution to the committee over a number of years. Sandy and Jenny have been part of the tough debates and negotiations in deciding on our worthy Hall of Fame Inductees over the years. We thank them both again for their years of service to the committee and wish them all the very best for the future.

To our Board of Governors we welcome Ali Clarke from ABC Radio Adelaide, Steven Trigg the Managing Director from Randall Wine Group and David Washington the Editor from InDaily. Ali, Steven and David bring a wealth of knowledge in the fields of sport and media to the Board of Governors. They join ongoing members Robert Gerard AO (Chair), John Daenke, Juliet Haslam OAM, Rachael Sporn OAM and the Hon Michael Wright.

We also thank outgoing Board Members Glenn Cooper AM, Paul Childs and Melvin Mansell for their valuable contribution to the Board over a number of years.

SPORT SA MEMBER PROFILE

Club de Petanque d'Adelaide

Club de Petanque d'Adelaide is the oldest Petanque Club in Australia and has been in continual operation since 1977. The club (situated on the corners of Greenhill, Unley and Pulteney roads) offers a range of social, cultural, recreational and physical activities through Petanque to schools, health organisations, corporates, clubs and the French community of South Australia.

On 12 July 2020, the club held its first major event within COVID-19 guidelines to host the annual Bastille Day Cup. Whilst the early morning weather was a little cold and grey, the day soon brightened up with glorious sun for the remainder of the day. The club hosted players from metropolitan Adelaide to create a great environment.

Club de Petanque d'Adelaide has recently partnered with Arthritis SA in offering a place for people with Arthritis to enjoy gentle exercise. All ages and levels are welcome to join and the club can be contacted at adelaidepetanque@gmail.com  or adelaidepetanque.com.

NATIONAL SPORTS CENSUS

The Australian Sports Professionals Association has launched the second annual National Sports Census.

The 2020 National Sports Census is designed to capture a response from every person working in Australian sport - whether they are a paid staff member, board member, contractor or volunteer employee. It doesn't matter if you work for a state, territory or national sporting organisation, sports business, council, industry body, or other organisation within Australian sport - the Census will capture everyone's sentiment.

This will help us understand a truly national perspective of the Australian Sports Industry, and will empower everyone in sport. This year is particularly important to understand due to the impacts of COVID-19.

The census will take approximately 3 minutes. Click here to take part.
