NEW Tackling Racism In Sport

Presented by Reconciliation SA

Participants will learn and unlearn key elements regarding racism and obtain a better understanding of the impacts of racism. Including:

  • Five Dimensions of Reconciliation
  • focus on identifying the problem of racism and its impact on the individuals who experience it
  • define racism from a personal perspective
  • understanding subtle and covert racism
  • exploration of mental health effects and impacts
  • concepts of dominant culture, systemic racism, privilege, and defensive responses to racism are explored
  • exploration of the underpinning tenets of racism and the ongoing, contemporary impact of colonisation.

 

Participants will workshop ideas to consider how they might ‘take action’ against racism in their sporting environment (this work can be used and aligned with Reconciliation Action Plans and contribute RAP deliverables) as well as workshop conflict management.

Target audience: Board, managers, staff, coaches and leadership at sporting organisations at all levels.

Number of participants: Optimal is 20 participants (minimum 10, maximum 40)

Mental Health First Aid

Presented by Breakthrough Foundation & NB&A Group

This nationally accredited Mental Health First Aid training provides participants with the skills to recognise a mental health crisis, respond appropriately and support the individual in recovery by applying what has been shown by research to be effective.

Participants will be educated on the signs and symptoms of mental health problems, together with how, what, when and where to administer first aid in a developing or crisis situation.

The training uses evidence-based research and addresses possible crisis situations arising from these mental health problems with a practical first aid response.

Mental Health Awareness

Presented by NB&A Group

Delivered by NB&A Group’s accredited MHFA Instructor, this two hour Mental Health Awareness Training is an introduction for adults (18 years and over). Coaches, Team Managers, Trainers and parents on the sidelines all have an influence over an individual’s mental health. Using a facilitated discussion approach, we will provide an overview of mental health and the skills to assist identify the early warnings signs of a mental health problem.

From watching these kids succeed or fail, it is our role as adults to be there every step of the way supporting failure and nurturing success.

All mental health is important and our influencing role in recognising the signs and symptoms of common mental illness could make all the difference.

This program includes a summary of risk factors as well as recognising signs and symptoms of depression, anxiety and substance use disorder. Participants will receive a workbook.

Target audience: Coaches, team managers, staff, managers, committee, volunteers, members (18+)

‘Monkey See, Monkey Do’  - Violence Prevention & Positive Role Modelling Education

Presented by Sammy D Foundation

Players and parents first work with Sammy D Foundation facilitators to unpack the story of Sam Davis who was tragically killed as a result of a violent and unprovoked one punch assault. Sam's story provides students with an example of the characteristics and consequences of bullying and violence.

Following the presentation, age-appropriate workshops will see our Education Facilitators work with groups of players to explore in greater detail the characteristics and impacts of bullying and violence, while senior players, parents and club officials look at the impacts of negative sideline behaviours and their influences.

Target audience: Players aged 10-13, parents and club officials.

Approximate run time: 50 minute Violence and Bullying Prevention Presentation followed by 25 minute Bullying Prevention Workshop (players) and Positive Role Modelling session (parents, officials and club members) run simultaneously.

‘Party Wise’ - Alcohol and Other Drug Education

Combined Violence Prevention Presentation - "Impact" and Alcohol and Other Drugs Education Presentation Players first work with Sammy D Foundation facilitators to unpack the story of Sam Davis who was tragically killed as a result of a violent and unprovoked one punch assault at a private party. Sam's story provides members with an example of the risks associated with substance misuse and the consequences that it has on victims, perpetrators, families, friends and the broader community.

Club members will then participate in an interactive alcohol and other drugs education presentation that explores the effects of alcohol and other drug use, and the associated risks, from a harm minimisation perspective. Target audience: 14+

Child Safe Officer Training

A Child Safe Officer at your club is vital to promote the message that keeping children safe is everyone's responsibility. Every club must work towards minimising risk to children and the Child Safe Officer helps to ensure everyone is aware of the club's policies and procedures to support this goal and can act on any incidents.

This training provides participants with information about obligations concerning child safety and child safe environments for their club/organisation. On completion, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the role of the Child Safe Officer and promote the role through your organisation.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the Children and Young People (Safety) Act 2017 and the Child
  • Safety (Prohibited Persons) Act 2016 concerning mandatory notification, child safe compliance and working with children checks.
  • Demonstrate understanding of ‘at risk’, ‘harm’ and ‘suspicion on reasonable grounds’.
  • Consider appropriate ways to respond to disclosures of abuse or neglect and making reports to the Child Abuse Report Line.
  • Identify measures to minimise risk to children and support a child safe environment.

Complaint Handling

Today, sporting organisations at all levels need to be able to respond to complaints from their members and personnel including inappropriate behaviour or unsatisfactory service or performance.

The aim of the Complaint Handling Course is to provide comprehensive, practical, quality training for individuals within sporting clubs and associations that have complaint handling responsibilities. The course emphasises how to handle different situations in a more effective and appropriate manner leading to successful outcomes and resolution. This course: 

  • Provides a refresher and debrief following completion of the online training.
  • Clarifies the role and responsibilities of the complaint handler and other relevant roles including the Member Protection Officer. 
  •  Clarifies principles of complaint handling.
  • Clarifies options and steps in complaint handling.
  • Provides practical situations for participants to develop and practice their complaint handling skills.
  • Provides very clear guidance about when and how to escalate a matter to the police or an external agency.
  • Provides guidance about local support agencies and resources to assist the complaint handler.
